Today on reddit there was a conversation about the relationship between smiling and grimacing, from an evolutionary vs. cultural perspective. Right now the talk comments pretty much it weighs in on the side of cultural variability, which I am a bit suspicious of, but I still think that the discussion in general is interesting and worth a read. Based on what I’ve read on this topic my gut (and we all know how reliable guts are) tells me that a lot of emotional responses such as mirth, disgust, other core ones, are probably hardwired to some extent with some variance and different forms of expression in different cultures.
